Exchange 2016 CU18 has been released to the Microsoft download centre!  Exchange 2016 has a different servicing strategy than Exchange 2007/2010 and utilises Cumulative Updates (CUs) rather than the Rollup Updates (RU/UR) which were used previously.    CUs are a complete installation of Exchange 2016 and can be used to install a fresh server or to update a previously installed one. Quick Tip – Manually Removing WAP Server

Update List of WAP Servers

Installing a Web Application Proxy (WAP) server consists of two distinct actions.  The first is installing the Remote Access role, and the second is to then configure the role.  The act of configuring Remote Access enables WAP to function as an AD FS proxy, and optionally enables you to also publish other applications.

Over time some of those servers may have been replaced without fully uninstallin… Read the rest “Quick Tip – Manually Removing WAP Server”

Exchange 2010 Decommission Checklist

The time approaches.   Exchange 2010 has almost transitioned out of its extended support lifecycle phase, and multiple organisations are completing the final components of their Exchange 2010 migration.

The last act is to uninstall Exchange 2010 once all of the resources have been moved to a newer version of Exchange. There are a few things to consider though and this is post to help organisations … Read the rest “Exchange 2010 Decommission Checklist”

Local Endpoint Used For Cross-Premises Free Busy Lookup

When troubleshooting cross-premises calendar availability issues, it can be useful to know the name of the local on-premises endpoint which is used.  By knowing the path and URL, you can then search the IIS logs for the path.

This will accelerate finding the correct entry(ies) and assist with troubleshooting.

Perhaps the best thing to come to Exchange over the last 10 years was the Hybrid Configuration Wizard (HCW).  While many take this feature for granted, if you had to manually deploy Exchange 2010 SP1 hybrid to Exchange Online you will shudder at the mention of the Service domain.  But let’s not dredge up those memories…

Recently an update was released to the HCW, and initially the update looke… Read the rest “Beware the Exchange Hybrid Configuration Wizard Doppelganger”

Unable to Edit WAP Published Application in Mixed Mode Farm

During the upgrade process it is expected that there will be multiple versions of AD FS and WAP servers operating in a farm at a given time.  This is actually a good option as it allows us to easily upgrade from AD FS 2012 R2 to a newer version such as 2016 or 2019.  We can do this without having to build a brand new farm from scratch and then cutting over applications to the new farm wi… Read the rest “Unable to Edit WAP Published Application in Mixed Mode Farm”

Previously Working Now Unable To See Exchange On-Premises Free/Busy – Redux

Exchange Federation Metadata Update

When deploying Exchange hybrid, one of the aspects that can prove to be the most challenging is Exchange Online mailboxes trying to view calendar information for on-premises mailboxes.

This is because there are multiple potential issues which can be caused due to management of Exchange on-premises, firewall rules and reverse proxy configuration issues.  What was slightly interesting with this custo… Read the rest “Previously Working Now Unable To See Exchange On-Premises Free/Busy – Redux”

Remove-HybridConfiguration Cmdlet

For various reasons, the aforementioned Remove-HybridConfiguration cmdlet has been something that has been something I've had to review recently.

This cmdlet is not present in Exchange 2010, it is only available in newer versions of Exchange.  For example if we try to find this cmdlet on an Exchange 2010 server, it is not present.

Only the Get, New, Set and Update-HybridConfiguration cmdlets are avai… Read the rest “Remove-HybridConfiguration Cmdlet”
