September 2020 Security Updates For Exchange 2016 and 2019

September 2020 Exchange Security Updated - KB4577352

Today is patch Tuesday for September 2020, and amongst the updates released today are security fixes for Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019.

More specifically, the fix is only available for the versions of Exchange 2016 and 2019 that are open for servicing.  This means that only the latest CUs can be serviced, and if you are running on an outdated CU then there is not way that you can receive these se… Read the rest “September 2020 Security Updates For Exchange 2016 and 2019”

Exchange 2010 Decommission Checklist

The time approaches.   Exchange 2010 has almost transitioned out of its extended support lifecycle phase, and multiple organisations are completing the final components of their Exchange 2010 migration.

The last act is to uninstall Exchange 2010 once all of the resources have been moved to a newer version of Exchange. There are a few things to consider though and this is post to help organisations … Read the rest “Exchange 2010 Decommission Checklist”

Local Endpoint Used For Cross-Premises Free Busy Lookup

When troubleshooting cross-premises calendar availability issues, it can be useful to know the name of the local on-premises endpoint which is used.  By knowing the path and URL, you can then search the IIS logs for the path.

This will accelerate finding the correct entry(ies) and assist with troubleshooting.

The full listing of Hybrid deployment prerequisites is available on Docs.

Beware the Exchange Hybrid Configuration Wizard Doppelganger

Perhaps the best thing to come to Exchange over the last 10 years was the Hybrid Configuration Wizard (HCW).  While many take this feature for granted, if you had to manually deploy Exchange 2010 SP1 hybrid to Exchange Online you will shudder at the mention of the Service domain.  But let’s not dredge up those memories…

Recently an update was released to the HCW, and initially the update looke… Read the rest “Beware the Exchange Hybrid Configuration Wizard Doppelganger”

Previously Working Now Unable To See Exchange On-Premises Free/Busy – Redux

Exchange Federation Metadata Update

When deploying Exchange hybrid, one of the aspects that can prove to be the most challenging is Exchange Online mailboxes trying to view calendar information for on-premises mailboxes.

This is because there are multiple potential issues which can be caused due to management of Exchange on-premises, firewall rules and reverse proxy configuration issues.  What was slightly interesting with this custo… Read the rest “Previously Working Now Unable To See Exchange On-Premises Free/Busy – Redux”

Remove-HybridConfiguration Cmdlet

For various reasons, the aforementioned Remove-HybridConfiguration cmdlet has been something that has been something I've had to review recently.

This cmdlet is not present in Exchange 2010, it is only available in newer versions of Exchange.  For example if we try to find this cmdlet on an Exchange 2010 server, it is not present.

Only the Get, New, Set and Update-HybridConfiguration cmdlets are avai… Read the rest “Remove-HybridConfiguration Cmdlet”

Exchange 2007 Outlook Anywhere White Paper

This is one of those older documents, that for many reasons I seem to keep coming back to over the years.  Even as we transition away from classic Outlook Anywhere to MAPI/HTTP, knowing some of the features/limitations of Outlook Anywhere and why MAPI/HTTP is a better replacement is something that will be around for a long time to come.

Since TechNet is dead, even though I know exactly what I'm loo… Read the rest “Exchange 2007 Outlook Anywhere White Paper”

“Unexpected” Exchange Certificate

When reviewing a customer’s Exchange server to appraise the current state of their certificates, they saw an "unexpected" certificate on the Exchange server.

The below is an Exchange 2010 SP3 RU24 server with a repro of the issue.  There was nothing wrong, but the reason for seeing the additional certificate was not readily apparent to them.

The customer was looking in Exchange Manag… Read the rest ““Unexpected” Exchange Certificate”
