Case Of the Disappearing GUI

What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

Is it as Miles Kington said, “Knowledge is knowing the tomato is a fruit, wisdom is not putting it in your fruit salad”.  Or is knowledge learning by your experience, and wisdom is learning through other people’s experiences?   Let’s make this post use the second option, and discuss what was observed on an recent(ish) trip.

The crux of this tale i… Read the rest “Case Of the Disappearing GUI”

Exchange 2013 CU9 MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled Missing

After upgrading an Exchange 2013 CU8 lab to CU9, the Set-Mailbox cmdlet did not present the expected options to configure sent items for shared mailboxes.

The MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled and MessageCopyForSendOnBehalfEnabled  parameters as discussed on the EHLO blog were missing.

This was a little puzzling as this was an expected feature of Exchange 2013 CU9.  None of the issue… Read the rest “Exchange 2013 CU9 MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled Missing”

Azure Active Directory Module–Newer Version Available Notifications

When connecting to Azure Active directory with the MSOnline PowerShell module, it will check the currently installed version.  This allows the service to let you know that a newer version may be available.  If the locally installed module is out-dated, you will get a message like the below:

Outlook Prompts For Domain Certificate Unexpectedly

Outlook Prompt Domain Name Certificate

Ran into an issue where this Outlook 2010 SP2 client, build 14.0.7113.5000, was throwing up unexpected certificate errors for the domain.  This is the Tailspintoys.ca domain.

User-1@tailspintoys.ca was complaining about the below certificate error:

Outlook Unexpectedly Prompts For Domain Root Certificate

Looking at the error message, the fact that it is the domain (tailspintoys.ca), and not a FQDN is a hint.  More on that later…

All of the Exchange URLs are … Read the rest “Outlook Prompts For Domain Certificate Unexpectedly”

Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN

This is one of those ye olde issues that keep coming back up in Exchange.  Have you every removed a mailbox, re-created it with the exact same SMTP address and then some people complain that they cannot send to the mailbox?

This can happen in a few circumstances.  For example if the Exchange administrator has an “oops”  and accidently deletes the account.  If they do not use the AD DS recycle bin f… Read the rest “Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN”

And now for some off topic humour…

Am I the only one who thought of Mobile Information Server (MIS) when looking at today’s Bing wallpaper?

This was from the time when we actually got CDs as installation media.  Things have certainly moved on…

From the Microsoft archives, here is our old chum MIS 2002:

Allow Users To Manage Distribution Groups Without Creating New Ones–Exchange 2013 Redux

In a previous Exchange 2010 post we discussed a scenario where users were delegated the capability to create Mail Enabled Contacts in Active Directory using a custom Role Based Access Control (RBAC) role.  As part of the solution, we enabled the MyDistributionGroups Role.  While this may meet the needs of most organisations, it does introduce one issue where users who are assigned such a  Role AssigRead the rest “Allow Users To Manage Distribution Groups Without Creating New Ones–Exchange 2013 Redux”

Managing Directory Synchronisation – Notes From The Field

When deploying an Office 365 solution, directory synchronisation is a critical component.  This is the tool that will synchronise the on-premises directory data to Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD).  As you can imagine if the synchronisation stops then chances are that you will run into some issues….

Note that this post is intended to cover both DirSync and AAD Sync, hence the generic title.
