Add-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer – You Must Provide A Value For This Property

When creating a new Database Availability Group, there was a bit of rude shock when the installation failed.  This customer had deployed multiple Exchange 2010 DAGs over the lifespan of the product, yet their latest build ran into an issue.  They were able to create the DAG, but when adding the first mailbox server to the DAG, the operation failed.

This was not due to an underlying issue where the W… Read the rest “Add-DatabaseAvailabilityGroupServer – You Must Provide A Value For This Property”

Delivery Failed From Office 365 Mailbox To On-Premises Exchange Mailbox

Delivery Failed From Office 365 Mailbox To On-Premises Exchange Mailbox

In an Exchange 2010 SP3 Hybrid deployment with Office 365, a client noted that they were unable to send email from their Office 365 mailbox to an on-premises mailboxes.  The user in Office 365 received an undeliverable message stating that Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups and the email address wasn’t found at the destination domain.    That was not the case as there certainly was … Read the rest “Delivery Failed From Office 365 Mailbox To On-Premises Exchange Mailbox”

Exchange 2013 CU9 MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled Missing

After upgrading an Exchange 2013 CU8 lab to CU9, the Set-Mailbox cmdlet did not present the expected options to configure sent items for shared mailboxes.

The MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled and MessageCopyForSendOnBehalfEnabled  parameters as discussed on the EHLO blog were missing.

This was a little puzzling as this was an expected feature of Exchange 2013 CU9.  None of the issue… Read the rest “Exchange 2013 CU9 MessageCopyForSentAsEnabled Missing”

Exchange 2013 CU9 Released

Exchange 2013 CU9 has been released to the Microsoft download centre!  Exchange 2013 has a different servicing strategy than Exchange 2007/2010 and utilises Cumulative Updates (CUs) rather than the Rollup Updates (RU/UR) which were used previously.    CUs are a complete installation of Exchange 2013 and can be used to install a fresh server or to update a previously installed o… Read the rest “Exchange 2013 CU9 Released”

Outlook Prompts For Domain Certificate Unexpectedly

Outlook Prompt Domain Name Certificate

Ran into an issue where this Outlook 2010 SP2 client, build 14.0.7113.5000, was throwing up unexpected certificate errors for the domain.  This is the Tailspintoys.ca domain.

User-1@tailspintoys.ca was complaining about the below certificate error:

Outlook Unexpectedly Prompts For Domain Root Certificate

Looking at the error message, the fact that it is the domain (tailspintoys.ca), and not a FQDN is a hint.  More on that later…

All of the Exchange URLs are … Read the rest “Outlook Prompts For Domain Certificate Unexpectedly”

Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN

This is one of those ye olde issues that keep coming back up in Exchange.  Have you every removed a mailbox, re-created it with the exact same SMTP address and then some people complain that they cannot send to the mailbox?

This can happen in a few circumstances.  For example if the Exchange administrator has an “oops”  and accidently deletes the account.  If they do not use the AD DS recycle bin f… Read the rest “Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN”

Allow Users To Manage Distribution Groups Without Creating New Ones–Exchange 2013 Redux

In a previous Exchange 2010 post we discussed a scenario where users were delegated the capability to create Mail Enabled Contacts in Active Directory using a custom Role Based Access Control (RBAC) role.  As part of the solution, we enabled the MyDistributionGroups Role.  While this may meet the needs of most organisations, it does introduce one issue where users who are assigned such a  Role AssigRead the rest “Allow Users To Manage Distribution Groups Without Creating New Ones–Exchange 2013 Redux”

Troubleshooting Exchange 2010 Search

Since Exchange servers are now storing an ever increasing amount of data, it is imperative that people can quickly search and retrieve the content from their mailbox.  This may have been possible without search capabilities in the past with a 20 MB mailbox quota (remember those days ?!?), but as quotas move to double gigabyte figures effective search is a hard requirement.

Exchange Search is a diffe… Read the rest “Troubleshooting Exchange 2010 Search”

Enable Remote Archive With Exchange Hybrid

Deploying an Exchange Hybrid solution offers many opportunities to extend messaging services into the cloud.  This is one of the biggest strengths of the Microsoft offering.  We can provide on-premises, cloud only and hybrid solutions.

One capability is cloud based archives.  This allows either:

  • On-premises mailbox with an archive in Office 365
  • Office 365 mailbox with archive also in Office 365
