Exchange Null Path Statement

Update 16-11-2020 -  Issue still persists.  Currently see the same behaviour on an Exchange 2016 CU18 server and a fresh Exchange 2013 Cu23 build.

Travelling to see different customers from one side of Canada to the other is always interesting.  This post is written whilst in Vancouver and is from a reported customer issue waaaaay out East.

The Exchange admins pointed out that they were consistently r… Read the rest “Exchange Null Path Statement”

Outlook 2013 Autodiscover

Many, many moons ago, we looked at the functionality of Autodiscover for on-premises Exchange.  At the time of writing that post the focus was on Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010.  Things change...

In this post we can look at the modifications introduced in Outlook 2013, and we will also need to review the changes in Outlook 2016 which will be in a separate post.

Transport Rule Changes For Next Exchange Cumulative Updates

Microsoft has provided rich support for Exchange on-premises to integrate with Exchange Online for several years.  This coexistence is one of the major strengths of the Microsoft cloud solution as it allows customers to perform Digital Transformation at their own pace.

It is not expected that an organisation will transition all of their on-premises mailboxes overnight, that would be unrealistic for… Read the rest “Transport Rule Changes For Next Exchange Cumulative Updates”

Exchange 2016 CU9 has been released to the Microsoft download centre!  Exchange 2016 has a different servicing strategy than Exchange 2007/2010 and utilises Cumulative Updates (CUs) rather than the Rollup Updates (RU/UR) which were used previously.    CUs are a complete installation of Exchange 2016 and can be used to install a fresh server or to update a previously installed one. Arbitration Mailboxes – Lay of The Land

At this point in time, most Exchange administrators will have seen and worked with arbitration mailboxes.  Chances are that the first encounter was somewhat unexpected and revolved around an issue with Exchange 2013 health mailboxes or being unable to delete the default mailbox database in Exchange 2010.

To illustrate where the different arbitration mailboxes were first introduced, multiple version… Read the rest “Arbitration Mailboxes – Lay of The Land”

Exchange 2016 Prerequisites AS-HTTP-Activation Missing

The below was an exercise in paying attention to detail for one of my customers.  They were in the middle of an Exchange 2010 to 2016 migration and were attempting to install the first Exchange 2016 server into the organisation. Windows Server 2016 was being used as the OS for these new servers.

However it was not going swimmingly.

As part of the pre-work they were installing the OS, applying Window… Read the rest “Exchange 2016 Prerequisites AS-HTTP-Activation Missing”

Office 365 Pilot Group Mail Flow Issues

When initially deploying and configuring Office 365, one of the initial questions is to select the on-premises objects which will be replicated to Azure Active Directory.  It is strongly recommended that all of the required directory and user hygiene is fully completed prior to the installation of Azure AD Connect.  It is easier and simpler to remediate UPN, invalid SMTP domains and other issues p… Read the rest “Office 365 Pilot Group Mail Flow Issues”

Exchange 2016 CU7 AD Forest Function Level Requirements

In September 2016, just over a year ago from the time of writing, Exchange 2016 CU3 added support for Windows 2016.  Exchange 2016 CU3 added support for installing Exchange 2016 onto Windows Server 2016 and also to have Windows 2016 Domain Controllers (DCs) in the environment.  There is a nuance with the latter.  In order to be supported with Windows 2016 DCs, the Active Directory (AD DS) had to be… Read the rest “Exchange 2016 CU7 AD Forest Function Level Requirements”
