Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Architecture Poster

A picture says a thousand words.   This is one of the reasons that the various architecture posters are so popular as they provide an easy way to visualise the Hyper-V stack.

Updated posters are now available for Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.  In addition to the architecture poster, there are other smaller bite sized posters on the below topics:

  • Generation 2 Virtual Machines
  • Hyper-V and Failover Clus

Windows Hyper-V 2012 & 8.1 Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine to Import

Back in May 2013, we discussed an issue which caused the Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machines To Import error.  Well, as mentioned in that blog post there are a few reasons for this error message being displayed and it does depend on the versions of Hyper-V in use.

There were some comments posted (thanks again for that by the way!) which mentioned an issue with importing VMs into Windows Server 201… Read the rest “Windows Hyper-V 2012 & 8.1 Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine to Import”

Exchange And Hyper-V Replica Support

After seeing several posts and some folks discussing whether or not Exchange supports the Hyper-V Replica feature I thought it would be prudent to address the following:

  • Does Exchange Support Hyper-V Replica?
  • Does Hyper-V Support Exchange?
  • How Do I use Exchange and Hyper-V Replica?

What Is Hyper-V Replica

For some background reading on Hyper-V and the Replica feature; the component poster and downloada… Read the rest “Exchange And Hyper-V Replica Support”

Updating Hyper-V Integration Components (IC)

One of my favourite features in Windows 8 is client side Hyper-V.  This allows me to run multiple virtual machines on my Lenovo W530 laptop without having to remote to other machines when I am on site with customers.

As you can imagine I have a plethora of VMs for a variety of situations, and I ran into a bit of a pickle when moving my Exchange 2003/2007/2010 migration workshop lab over to Windows 8… Read the rest “Updating Hyper-V Integration Components (IC)”

Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine To Import

Since I have this lovely Lenovo W530 laptop with a couple of disks and 32GB of RAM, it is great to run VMs on!  As you can imagine, I have multiple different Exchange labs to reflect all the different versions and builds that are in use.  Generally I have been able to import all of my older VMs into Hyper-V on Windows 8 and 2012 with no issues.  But as you probably have guessed by now, if I had no… Read the rest “Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine To Import”

Hyper-V Cluster Console Crash Windows Server 2012

Update 1-3-2013:  You may also want to reference the Hyper-V 2012 and Cluster update wiki pages as linked & discussed here.

After building up a nice new Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster with SCVMM 2012 SP1, it was a bit strange to get the world’s longest error when opening up the Failover Cluster MMC.  The error started with:

A weak event was created and it lives on the wrong object, there isRead the rest “Hyper-V Cluster Console Crash Windows Server 2012”

System Center 2012 SP1 Beta Available

The beta release for System Center 2012 SP1 is now available for you to download and test in your lab environments.  This is an interesting release as it is adding support for Windows Server 2012.  In the case of SCVMM 2012 SP1, it means that it can only be installed on the RTM version of Windows Server 2012.

At least I know what I’ll be doing this weekend now Smile

Monitoring Removal of Hyper-V AVHD Files

Have you used Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V; created a snapshot, deleted it and then wondered why the snapshot files are still hanging around?    Like to know what to expect and the EventIDs that are associated with snapshot removal?

Likely you will be familiar with .vhd files which are the disk storage files in currently released versions of Hyper-V.  It is also possible for other organi… Read the rest “Monitoring Removal of Hyper-V AVHD Files”
