Quick Tip Windows 10 – Unable To Stop Device Notification

This is one of those little things that make life much, much easier.  Imagine the scenario; you go to eject a USB disk drive or USB flash and Windows tells you that it is still in use.  How to track down which application is using the drive?

Eject, Eject, Eject

In the below example, the USB flash drive E: will be ejected.  Or at least, we will try...

Eject, Eject, Eject !

Alas, no!  There is a problem ejecting the USB mas… Read the rest “Quick Tip Windows 10 – Unable To Stop Device Notification”

Today marks the end of support for the legacy synchronisation tools which are used to connect on-premises Active Directory to Office 365 and Azure AD.  Specifically Windows Azure Active Directory Sync (DirSync) and Azure AD Sync are the tools which are transitioning out of support at this time.  Note also that version 1.0  of Azure Active Directory (AAD Connect) is also transitioning of support.  … Read the rest “End of DirSync and AAD Sync Support”

End of Exchange 2007 Support

Today’s the day to say goodbye to our old friend, Exchange 2007.  At this point you should have completed the project to move all mailboxes and resources from Exchange 2007 to a supported version of Exchange, and uninstall the Exchange 2007 servers.

Thanks to Exchange 2007 I went to MCM, and discovered just how badly Greg Taylor and accomplices can break an Exchange environment and turn it into a qu… Read the rest “End of Exchange 2007 Support”

Transport Rule To Force On-Premises Terminology In a Not So Subtle Way

There are many memes doing the rounds inside Microsoft which are sent out when someone uses the term on-premise rather than on-premises.  Note the extra"S" in the latter.  This is not new, and the last rant on this subject was a year ago Friday Morning Rant – Premise and Tenents.

For another bit of Friday morning fun, how about we provide some rather unsubtle feedback via an Exchange transpor… Read the rest “Transport Rule To Force On-Premises Terminology In a Not So Subtle Way”

How To Enable AAD Connect Sync Cycle

When installing Azure Active Directory Connect (AAD Connect), it is sometimes required that the initial synchronisation is not initiated until additional configuration has been performed.  This may mean that rules have to be edited, or that certain filtering options are to be applied.

AAD Connect will inform you that synchronisation will not occur until you enable it.  This is highlighted along the… Read the rest “How To Enable AAD Connect Sync Cycle”

Blog Code Examples Not Running Due to Smart Quotes

During an excellent trip to see a local customer *, it was noted that some of the script examples on the blog were not working as expected.  The post we were looking at was the Check Exchange 2013 Schema and Object Information in AD.  When the sample commands were copied, the Exchange administrator was not able to immediately use them, even after editing to suit their environment.

The sym… Read the rest “Blog Code Examples Not Running Due to Smart Quotes”

Exchange 2016 CU5 Released

Exchange 2016 CU5 has been released to the Microsoft download centre!  Exchange 2016 has a different servicing strategy than Exchange 2007/2010 and utilises Cumulative Updates (CUs) rather than the Rollup Updates (RU/UR) which were used previously.    CUs are a complete installation of Exchange 2016 and can be used to install a fresh server or to update a previously installed one. Exchange 2013 ha… Read the rest “Exchange 2016 CU5 Released”
