Exchange 2016 CU1 Released

Exchange 2016 CU1 has been released to the Microsoft download centre!  Exchange 2016 has a different servicing strategy than Exchange 2007/2010 and utilises Cumulative Updates (CUs) rather than the Rollup Updates (RU/UR) which were used previously.    CUs are a complete installation of Exchange 2016 and can be used to install a fresh server or to update a previously installed o… Read the rest “Exchange 2016 CU1 Released”

Create Exchange Email Address Policy With Underscore

When onsite with a customer last week they were curious as to how they could create an Exchange Email Address Policy (EAP) with an underscore in it.  This was because the option to use an underscore is not present within the Exchange graphical tools.

For the record, I’m personally not a fan of using special characters in any situation.  I’m a simple creature and do not use undersco… Read the rest “Create Exchange Email Address Policy With Underscore”

Controlling Exchange 2013/2016 Proxying To Exchange 2010

Exchange 2013 streamlined the connectivity between servers with the “every server is an island” design philosophy.  The intent was to remove the strict version dependency hooks which existed in the previous versions of Exchange.  For example, the Exchange 2007 HUB Store Driver can only communicate with the Exchange 2007 Mailbox role.  Conversely, the Exchange 2010 HUB Store Driver can only communi… Read the rest “Controlling Exchange 2013/2016 Proxying To Exchange 2010”

Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN

This is one of those ye olde issues that keep coming back up in Exchange.  Have you every removed a mailbox, re-created it with the exact same SMTP address and then some people complain that they cannot send to the mailbox?

This can happen in a few circumstances.  For example if the Exchange administrator has an “oops”  and accidently deletes the account.  If they do not use the AD DS recycle bin f… Read the rest “Unable to Reply to Old Emails Due to legacyExchangeDN”

Quick Tip: What Restarts Has Managed Availability Issued

Exchange 2013 introduced the Managed Availability feature to provide a very capable automated monitoring and management framework.  Managed Availability allows Exchange to self diagnose and to self correct issues without having to escalate to a carbon life based unit for every issue.  Whilst Managed Availability may still have to page humans, the frequency is certainly reduced compared to Exchange… Read the rest “Quick Tip: What Restarts Has Managed Availability Issued”

Exchange ServerName Points To Wrong Or Decommissioned Server

This post was promoted from the draft bin to production after a customer visit a couple of weeks ago.  When onsite we were looking at how the environment was configured.  The admins had written a series of scripts to determine the environment state which was excellent to see!  One thing that they had assumed though was that the ServerName attribute on a mailbox was where the database was currently … Read the rest “Exchange ServerName Points To Wrong Or Decommissioned Server”

Exchange and AntiVirus Exclusions – A Critical Conversation

Scanning Exchange databases with file system antivirus is a recipe for disaster.  This really should not come as a surprise for admins running Exchange services within the enterprise, since this has been the field requirement for a long time.  The documentation provided by Microsoft is very clear in what exclusions are required for file system antivirus and Exchange to coexist.  For reference the … Read the rest “Exchange and AntiVirus Exclusions – A Critical Conversation”
