Download Hyper-V Best Practices Analyzer (BPA)

This tool has been out for a while, but have seen multiple customers not leveraging it on their Hyper-V servers as it is not installed by default on Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V hosts.

It is particularly useful for ensuring that the integration components inside the VM are the correct version.  Note the Best Practices Analyzer section at the bottom of this screenshot:

List Of Updates for Hyper-V

Previously the list of updates for Hyper-V was stored and maintained as part of the regular TechNet documentation.

Customers asked to have an RSS feed that they could subscribe to and for the list to be maintained in a more rapid fashion.

Thus the update list was moved from TechNet to a new location on the TechNet wiki.

Required Hotfix For Windows 8 VM Running on Hyper-V 2008 or 2008 R2 Host

EDIT 8-2-2013:  A new update KB 2744129 has superseded the  original KB 2526776

Please note that this new update now applies to Hyper-V 2008 and 2008 R2  -- the original was only for R2.

 

If you are testing out Windows 8 as a VM which is hosted on a Windows 2008 or 2008 R2 Hyper-V server, then you will need to install the following update.

“Slow” File Copy Issues

 

A recent performance issue case revolved around slow disk access times, and the impact that this had on Hyper-V and Windows in general.

The customer had identified that one of their SAN units was dramatically out performing another one, even though the slower unit should have been orders of magnitude faster – well, at least on paper!

Hyper-V Connectivity Issue

Update:  Newer firmware has been released since this was originally posted.

Ran into an interesting issue last week with a HP DL 585 Hyper-V host which had intermittent network connectivity over one of its defined virtual networks.

In the system event log the following warning was logged:

To resolve the issue, HP has released an updated NIC driver which is dated 11-11-2011.
