Windows 10 Poor Graphics Performance

Since there will be a good few folks running Windows 10 who subscribe to the RSS feed, I though it would worthwhile sharing a recent issue I had with my Windows 10 laptop.  This is a Lenovo W530 with ample CPU, SSD and video card performance.  It should run like a beast, but recently the graphics performance was terrible.  Clicking around between windows took seconds, and searching … Read the rest “Windows 10 Poor Graphics Performance”

Doh! Windows Update Has Navigation Tabs

Windows Update is a very important feature in the newer builds of the OS.  If we think back to the NT 3.5/4.0 days the process to obtain updates was very different.  Just to obtain a hotfix you needed to call in, provide credit card details and then obtain the update.  How times have changed!  And for the better!

This post is one of those Homer moments.  When you realise fo… Read the rest “Doh! Windows Update Has Navigation Tabs”

Windows 10 Hyper-V Error 0x80070780 – File Cannot Be Accessed By The System

Last week after showing a client some of new features in Windows 10, they went off and upgraded a laptop to the preview from Windows 8.1.  Initially all seemed to go well.  That is until they tried to start up VMs on their SSD drive.   At that point Mr Sad & Grumpy came to visit.

They were getting errors such as:

  • VMName failed to start
  • Microsoft emulated IDE controller failed

How To Disable Remote Desktop Printer Mapping

After doing Exchange Risk Assessment (ExRAP) and Exchange Risk Assessment As A Service for almost four years, one thing continues to irritate my OCD personality!  When I look at the event logs on an Exchange server, the logs should be a sea of blue.  That is there should be no errors as that indicates something is not quite right and should be addressed.

Opening up the system event log on numerous c… Read the rest “How To Disable Remote Desktop Printer Mapping”

How To Hide Server Manager At Logon

Since some of my test machines are a touch low on resources, having to wait for the server manager process to finish loading can be a little bit painful. On those machines a very pertinent question is: How can I disable Server Manager from auto starting?

There are group policy and local policy options to suppress this in addition to editing the registry.

There is always the option to disable it dire… Read the rest “How To Hide Server Manager At Logon”

How To Import Windows 2008 R2 VM To Windows 2012 or 8.1 Using Boot To VHD

One of the popular topics lately has revolved around the Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machines To Import error.  This issue can arise when we try and import a VM into Windows Server 2012 R2 or 8.1 which was originally exported from Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2.  Such exported VMs from 2008 or 2008 R2 use a .exp file to hold the exported VM's configuration.  The issue is discussed in detail in the… Read the rest “How To Import Windows 2008 R2 VM To Windows 2012 or 8.1 Using Boot To VHD”

Windows Hyper-V 2012 & 8.1 Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine to Import

Back in May 2013, we discussed an issue which caused the Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machines To Import error.  Well, as mentioned in that blog post there are a few reasons for this error message being displayed and it does depend on the versions of Hyper-V in use.

There were some comments posted (thanks again for that by the way!) which mentioned an issue with importing VMs into Windows Server 201… Read the rest “Windows Hyper-V 2012 & 8.1 Hyper-V Did Not Find Virtual Machine to Import”

SkipAsSource Flag Cleared In Windows 2012

For a while now I’ve been using the Netsh SkipAsSource Flag to allow multiple IPs on a server and only the primary IP registers in DNS.  The previous series of articles in this series are here:

Fine Grained Control When Registering Multiple IP Addresses–Part Trois

You may have seen the previous articles, part one and two,  where I’d blogged about controlling DNS registration for network interfaces with multiple IP addresses.  For Exchange administrators this is a a concern because sometimes we have to create multiple web sites on a Client Access Server (CAS).  This is typically done so that OWA can have different authentication flags (Forms, NTLM, Basic) or a… Read the rest “Fine Grained Control When Registering Multiple IP Addresses–Part Trois”
